Roman tomb near Silistra is open to visitors

Anita Valentinova, source:tourism-bulgaria.org, 30 August 2010

The Roman Tomb in Silistra is one of the most famous monuments of tomb architecture in Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula, a typical example of a building that date back to the Late Antiquity. Unlike the majority of tombs from III - V century, the whole interior of Silistra tomb is covered with paintings. The frescoes of the tomb are considered to date back to IV century or more precisely from the reign of Emperor Theodosius I / 378-395 /. They are a vital source for researching not only the culture and the art of the province of Dolna Miziya, but also of art that was typical of the Late Antiquity.
Please, note that you can visit the historic place only in September. The season is particularly suitable for the preservation of all frescoes, announced representatives of the museum. Roman tomb was opened to visitors due to the increased interest shown towards the place.
